BJP expresses shock at Manipur situation, will focus on shortage of essential goods

The BJP delegation led by opposition leader in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj has expressed shock over the prevailing state of affairs in Manipur. The high-level delegation assured the people that various issues confronting them including acute price rise of essential commodities, will be highlighted in the forthcoming parliamentary session commencing July 26. National BJP leaders who are on a visit of Manipur addressed a press conference at Imphal on Friday. Addressing the press meet, opposition leader Sushma Swaraj highlighted the sufferings of the people of Manipur on different fronts, and charged the state and the central government of being insensitive to the plight of the people. The BJP leader observed that Manipur has been reeling under various hardships and the party’s high command decided to visit the state to get a firsthand account of the situation in the state so that the matter could be raised in the ensuing monsoon parliamentary session. She also disclosed that after arrival in the state, the BJP team met 10 to 12 delegations from various sections of society. During these meetings, the delegations complained that people are suffering due to the want of basic amenities and essential commodities arising out of the recent economic blockade on National Highways. Deputy leader of Rajya Sabha, SS Aluwahlia, while addressing mediapersons, observed that apart from the problems arising out of insurgency, extortion, AFSPA etc, he was shocked to know that even the health sector of the state is being hampered. He further stated that though the --- more than two months long economic blockade of Manipur has been lifted --- there is still no respite for the people as the regular supply of essential commodities to the state is yet to be restored. He also assured the people of Manipur that the BJP will compel the UPA government to redress the grievances of the people of Manipur by forcefully projecting their issues in parliament. Rajya Sabha MP Chandan Mitra also expressed shock and concern over the lack of sensitivity of the state and central governments towards the sufferings of the people. He further said that though the NH-53 is in pathetic condition, no long term policy is being taken up to develop the highway. Sushma Swaraj also charged that the state government is itself involved in extortion and is hand in gloves with militants. She stated that though there is no BJP MP from Manipur, the party will appoint MPs in charge for Manipur and won’t let the matter go unnoticed.
