The World Bank will pump in Rs 1,072 crore for road connectivity in rural areas of Meghalaya, Union Minister of State for Rural Development Agatha Sangma said on Monday. The implementation of the projects in the state is proposed to start from 2011. Altogether 567 habitations of the total 756 habitations eligible for road connectivity will be covered under the project which is expected to be completed within five years, Sangma said.
She, however, lamented that the state needs to gear up to implement the project.
"The institutional arrangement of the state need be made efficient to handle the funds. While the state has no separate department to implement the PMGSY schemes, the PWD department has a cell that look after it. But that cell is not functional," she said after reviewing the implementation of the PMGSY schemes in the state.
She expressed the need for more engineers and skilled workforce.
