Himachal people welcome Obama-Dalai Lama meeting

SHIMLA - Using his blood as the sketching medium, Dr. Mahesh Yadav, an artist-cum-crusader, has made a portrait of US President Barack Obama.

He termed this portrait of Obama in blood as a token of gratitude to the American President for agreeing to meet the Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama while exhibiting it at Shimla on Thursday.

He hopes that the meeting between Obama and the Dalai Lama will usher a new chapter to resolve the Tibetan issue.

“I welcome the decision of Barack Obama to meet his Holiness Dalai Lama and to hold a discussion with him. This decision raises a hope in humanitarians and victimised Tibetans that the meeting may lead to a peaceful solution to the cause of Tibetans. So I portrayed (Barack Obama) in my blood to express my thanks. And we hope that after the meeting he will pressurise China because if we have to save democracy, peace and justice, we have to free Tibet,” he added.

On their part, the Tibetans-in-exile, residing in Himachal Pradesh, appreciated the spirit of Yadav towards their solidarity and struggle.

” Obviously it is very important because US is one of the most powerful countries. Regarding about the visit, I hope a positive reply,” said Dolma, a Tibetan activist.

Apart from sketching portraits, over the past one decade, Yadav has also been scribbling letters written in his blood for the Tibetan cause and global peace.

LEONARDO DA VINCI’s body could be exhumed in France if Italian scholars get their way.

Scientists hope their controversial plans to dig up the artist, who died in 1519, and carry out DNA tests on his remains will help them solve a series of mysteries Da Vinci took the grave.

These include how he died and whether or not the remains are indeed those of the Italian master.

The Italians are lobbying French officials to gain permission to exhume Da Vinci at Amboise Castle.

Sangma is frustrated: Meghalaya Congress

Taking strong exception to senior NCP leader and former Speaker P A Sangma's comment that a prime minister should be a member from the Lok Sabha, Meghalaya Congress on Thursday said such remarks are an indication of his "frustration".

"His comments are an indication of extreme frustration. He has no other issue to rake up to get attention," senior Congress leader and deputy chief minister Mukul Sangma said.

The NCP leader was recently critical of the fact that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is not from the Lok Sabha.

"I am a strong believer of the parliamentary system of governance, but in the last several years, I have been a very disappointed man...For years Lok Sabha has failed to produce a prime minister," the former Lok Sabha Speaker had said.

Mukul Sangma said the NCP leader did not find any other issue to rake up.

"He has aired such an unreasonable and illogical remark to attract attention of public," the Congress leader added.

Five Manipur separatists arrested in Assam

GUWAHATI: Five militants from a banned outfit in Manipur were arrested in Assam Thursday when the group was on way to a base camp for arms training, officials said.
A police spokesperson said the rebels from the outlawed People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) were arrested from near Jorabat on the outskirts of Guwahati.

"Based on specific inputs that a group of PREPAK militants were travelling in a vehicle, we set up road checks and intercepted their vehicle and managed to arrest them," a police official said.

The five arrested militants told police interrogators that they were going to Tinsukia district in eastern Assam. From there, they were scheduled to go Arunachal Pradesh for arms training.

"We believe the PREPAK militants were going to some training base along the Arunachal-Myanmar border," the official said.

Can't demote a former CM: Meghalaya deputy CM

Amid a row over the elevation of three MLAs of the ruling Congress-led alliance to the rank of chief minister, Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on Thursday said a legislator who was a chief minister in the past cannot be "demoted".

"It is not proper for any political arrangement where an MLA who was a former chief minister is demoted. This has been a tradition in Meghalaya," Sangma, also in charge of Finance department, told reporters.

He said one must understand the "political management" that is required to be resorted to in a coalition government.

"We have MLAs, who happen to be former chief ministers. So long as they are MLAs, it is befitting for us to recognise and acknowledge their services and give them the status of chief minister," Sangma said.

After the elevation of the rank and status of Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee president Friday Lyngdoh to the rank and status of chief minister, there are four political leaders in the ruling Congress-led alliance to enjoy that status.

Two leaders of United Democratic Party (UDP), which is the main partner in the alliance, also enjoys the same status – State Planning Board chairman Donkupar Roy and Meghalaya Economic Development Council chairman J D Rymbai.
