India succesfully test fires Astra missile

Bhubaneshmwar, Jan 11: After a slew of missile test failures in 2009, India started off the new year by successfully testing the Astra air-to-air missile.

The test was carried out at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) on the Orissa coast.

Speaking to a news agency, SP Dash the head of ITR said that the short-range missile has the capability of jamming ground radar systems.

With a range of 25km (15 miles), Astra (weapon) can be fitted into any fighter aircraft the ITR director informed.

“It was a very good flight,” Dash is quoted as saying.
