Manipur celebrates Cheiraoba

Just like the Bihu celebration in Assam, the vaishnavite Meiteis of Manipur celebrating Cheiraoba festival- marking the beginning of a New Year in Meitei calender. Family feasting and pilgrimage up the Cheirao-Ching marked the occasion. After cleaning up the houses and making offering of food and prayer to the ancestral domestic deity, Sanamahi, a pilgrimage to Cheirao-ching that stands tall overlooking the picturesque Imphal valley is a must to start the new year in the right way. Offering of prayer to the deity that resides atop the Cheirao-ching is an auspicious way to begin the new year. Stream of people, all dressed in the pious traditional attires, climb up this hill to offer their prayers. The new cycle of life has definitely started and what better way then to begin it with spirit of camaraderie.
