Training mandatory for promotion of police officers: Pillai

The government is making training mandatory for promotion of all police officers, Union Home Secretary GK Pillai said on Friday."We are giving highest stress on making sure that all officers undergo periodic training and at regular interval," he said after reviewing the performance of the North Eastern Police Academy (NEPA) in Shillong.Underlining regular training as an important component for officers, Pillai said there was a proposal to request state governments to send participants - officers in the ranks of deputy superintendents of police and sub-inspectors – as the participation in the courses being offered there was low.Pillai said the meeting was to review the performance of NEPA and consider the proposals recommended by the governing council of the institute for the upgradation of NEPA.He said a number of proposals were discussed, including construction of an auditorium, swimming pool and a clinic for doctors. The courses offered by the academy were also reviewed.Set up in 1978 by the Centre, the premier police training institute has been catering to the police training needs of the North Eastern states.
