IMPHAL: Barely two days after a migrant worker had been killed in Imphal, two Hindi-speaking persons were gunned down by suspected militants here Gajinder Ram (50), a resident of Darwa village in Bihar's Motihari district, and Subhash Yadav (30) of Assam's Cachar district were fast asleep in their rented house at Chingmeirong when the miscreants shot at them. The duo died instantaneously.
Police found a few empty cases of 9mm bullets from the scene of killings. Though no rebel group has so far owned up to the attack, director general of police (DGP) Yumnam Joykumar Singh said a militant outfit is suspected to be involved. Police have sounded a red alert in the valley areas in the wake of the attacks on migrant workers.
Locals said Yadav was working in a mini-ice factory run by Prabhu Ram, who also stayed in the same house. Prabhu is the brother-in-law of Gajinder who had come to Imphal a week ago, a local said.
Wednesday's killings pose a fresh threat to a huge number of migrant workers living in the insurgency-hit Manipur. A source said about 50,000 migrant workers live in and around Imphal city alone.
"A security review meeting was convened with senior police officers ensure that such attacks do not recur," the DGP told TOI.
On Tuesday, miscreants gunned down a sweetmeat vendor in the Pangei area of Imphal. He, too, had come from Bihar and settled in the northeastern state.
